Drown Radio - Me Geek Pretty One Day

Hey ya’ll, guess what…I’ve finished my first episode of Drown Pirate Radio and I think it’s pretty neat.

I used to work in radio in Nashville, and after that did pirate radio in Minneapolis for a year or two as well. I loved doing it, but due to lack of decent equipment in the pirate radio station and lack of personal say in legitimate radio, I was never able to do the show exactly how I wanted.

I had been wanting to produce a musical podcast for a long time now, but was just too overwhelmed to ever get started. To make it easier, I thought I could dabble with different themes for each show. That’ll keep it interesting, plus make it easier to narrow down my options.

This episode’s theme is space, thus dubbed “Space Mix Tape 01″.
Since there is so much remixing, blending, mashing, and short extra bits, a traditional track list is hard to do, but I’ll give it my best go.

It starts with me talking over A Night With Two Moons (original Forbidden Planet soundtrack by the Barrons).
Then of course, Swingin’ on the Moon by Mel “The Velvut Uzi” Torme.
Then you hear Blue Moon (Dean Martin) over Moon Zero X (Anti-Pop Consortium). Not really a mash up, but I still have this feeling I’m going straight to hell for doing it.
The interlude is one of my pieces (Drown Radio) and was created as a buffer into the next song, Space Boy by the Pumpkins (live recording). Of course my beat comes in again, before the final chorus.
Next up is “He’s Dead Jim” by Confidential… This is a Drown Radio remix if you couldn’t tell. Live Long and Spocker.
This track feeds well into Cousin Isaac’s “Door To Door” the Drown Radio nerdcore remix. It’s a bit of a stretch putting this in the Space Mix tape, but listen to the chorus closely. Can you hear the sound of a Star Trek door closing (from the original show) followed by the sound of a Star Trek The Next Generation door opening as Isaac is singing about going from one door to another? Good.
Speaking of doors, Louis Prima comes in nicely with Beep! Beep! Another Drown Radio bastardization obviously.
Let’s follow that up with Clara Rockmore on the theremin while Gil Scot Herron bitches about a couple whitey’s on the moon.
Then there is a quick clip of Clara bitching about theremins in Hollywood followed by local band Project:Pimento rocking out one of the most theremin soundtracks ever.
Then we hear Chan Marshal (aka Cat Power) playing The Moon followed by Minneapolis based band Work of Saws playing a song off of their first album.
The podcast wraps up with a sleepy little gem from the Modernaires called Sleepy Little Space Cadet.
