David, thanks for asking. I had read on a few web sites that the name was Swedish, but upon looking further it appears the root actually has Greek origin as Gygax explains in this youtube video;

In what way is “gygax” Swedish for “giant”? I have never heard it or anything like it before. (I’m a Swede.)

This song has been stuck in my head since i first listened to it. Mostly because you hit the nail right on the head with my D&D experience. I’ve only ever played one campaign but it totally turned me on the the world of imaginary monsters, and rolling a d20 for EVERYTHING. Anyway, Kudos for this awesome tribute to Gygax.
