This episode of Drown Pirate Radio (titled Robot Friends Model # 001) was done in conjunction with Z’s podcast, Radio Free Hipster. We dig each others podcasts so much that we decided to each release a robot themed podcast on the same day.

Download Drown Pirate Radio’s third episode “Robot Friends 001” here.

You can read about Z’s episode (titled Robot Friends Module A) here.

I am sorry to everyone for the delay, I spent ALL DAY working with computer problems… I guess that just drives the point though; Man VS. Machine?

Machine wins.

It was like that scene in Matrix 2, in the boiler room, when Neo comes to the realization that there are some machines that keep him alive, while others are trying to kill him… List of songs after the bump.

Robot Friends Model # 001 starts off with the <strike>soulful crooning</strike> nasal wit of MC Chris, as he waxes ecstatic on the life of being a pet robot owner.

Then comes DJ Swamp with one simple command, Worship The Robots. Perhaps Chris should have followed this advice.

Yes that is the Jackson 5. Dancing Machine… It’s a machine, so it counts… Besides I really love that break and wanted to Drown Radio-ify it a bit.

During the meltdown I layered bits of OK Robot by Bruce Haack over some of my own various beats. The horn samples are from the next song.

Connie Francis’s song “Robot Man” was a new find, but I knew I had to work it into the podcast.

Then we hear Bent Bolt and the Nut’s sappy tune “I’m a Mechanical Man”. If anyone knows of a Robot Girl that can fit a Mechanical Man, please let him know.

The next track before the break is a brand new track I did with Schaffer The Dark Lord. The lyrics and all that are his, the beats are mine, and the cuts from MC Plus+’s DJ, Lord Illingworth. This is the first track I’ve done with STD, hopefully more are on the way, but for now this is the only one and it’s only available on Drown Pirate Radio. Note the cloning reference at the end of the song… fans of Schaffer may get the extra joke, but if you don’t get it, check out his myspace page.

Pete Miser’s Scent of a Robot is a fantastic way to kick the show back into gear. The video for this song is a must see!

Then we bring back Haack, this time doing his own song instead of flowing over mine. Not that people who rhyme over my beats are hacks…

Kraftwerk. Of course I have to play a Krafwerk song on a robot podcast.

Fans of da ‘werk should check out the 8 Bit Operators Kraftwerk Cover Album. Or better yet, get the 12” single when it comes out (that’s the only way to get 8 Bit Weapon’s track).

In comes Timmy Taylor and Brainiac for a few bars. Brainiac are one of my all time favorite bands, and really I just wanted to find an excuse to play a song of theirs on one of my podcasts… However, I can’t say it worked out fantastically, hopefully people can put up with it for a minute.

Selby Tigers, a defunct Minneapolis rock band, play “These Are Not The Droids”.

Then comes another one of my favorite bands, 8bit bEtty. 8bb just moved to New York and is hoping to have a super productive year, starting with remixing one of my songs “Twistin’ Cherry Stems”. I’m hoping it will be done in time for my upcoming sex podcast. You can help motivate bEtty to finish the track here.

I’m not done talking about 8bit bEtty, download Too Bleep To Blop here, it’s the most fantastic (and free) you can find.

Another Minneapolis band, Work Of Saws, plays “Robot Killed a Guard”. So beautiful. So freakin’ beautiful.

And it fits nicely side by side with Cook Records “Not Programmed to Love”. I found this via Otis Fodder’s excellent Music Project. Here is his current 365 Day Project.

And finally is Voltare with “Sexy Data Tango”. I know nothing about the man (Voltare) or any of his other works, but damn if this song isn’t just perfect as a segway from this show to the next.

This time the theme will be SEX! The sex episode, titled Audio Erotica, will feature some porno soundtracks, nerdcore songs, found recordings, and dirty lounge songs.

As a special treat for the sex podcast I got an interview with porno director and Vivid Alt business manager Eon Mckai and adult movie starlet Dana Dearmond. How cool is that? Very! It is very cool.

We talked about the evolution of porno soundtracks and the role of music in alt porn. Dana even geeked out talking about chiptunes and one of her favorite bands the Nintendudes.

Captians Blog, stardate January 9th, 2007.

The newest episode of the Drown Pirate Radio podcast is availlable now.

Click here for episode 2, The Space Mix Tape Part 2.

There are more episodes planned in the future and I could use your help. I’m looking for fantastic songs dealing with any of these topics: Robots, Cover Songs, Sex.

Thanks for listening, and please help me spread this podcast around.

After my intro, the podcast starts off with the opening excerpt from Beyond the Blue by The Christian Astronauts. Beyond the Blue is a wonderful old novelty record/religious propaganda piece. Beyond The Blue was originally released in ‘71 and has recently been re-released by Bay Area label Companion Records. This episode is smothered with chunks off of Beyond the Blue, as a matter of fact, so is the first Space Mixtape.

After Dean’s scream, the first song of the mixtape starts off. It’s off of Buckner and Garcia’s all video game themed album “Pac-Man Fever”. The song is called Hyperspace, and I swear that he sings “Hyperspace, push the only button and I’m back in the race”.

Then there is a beautiful blend into the first Kool Keith track of the podcast, Object Unknown (funky redneck remix). Quick note, I have come to the conclusion that I could do an entire 45 minute/Kool Keith/space themed mixtape, without using two songs off of the same album.

Object Unknown then mixes into Earth People, off of Keith’s super-mega-ultra-important hip hop classic, Dr. Octagon.

Then you hear MC Router’s voice cut in, and Trekkie Pride (a brand new Router/Funky 49 collabo) beams up. Load this shit into your Communicator and crank it up.

Then comes Sister Shoup then chimes in with “Countdown”, obviously off of the The Christian Astronauts. The counting is so weird in this tune. Did anyone notice that she never says “one”?

Check out that smooth transition into MC Frontalot’s “Yellow Lasers”. From counting down till armageddon into golden shower references, brilliant. This is Front’s original demo version, different than the one on his absolutely brilliant “Nerdcore Rising” album.

Indie-rock superstar Lou Barlow scream’s “just gimme indie rock” and Folk Implosion’s “Sputniks Down” comes in. Drown Radio did a short little remix (when the drums come in) on this track. This is the only remix I did on this mixtape.

After the drums, Hum’s “Stars” comes in for a chorus. Hey, I’m really looking for the 3 Empirion remixes of Stars. Help me!
The next track is “Farward” by Micronots. A classic hip hop track out of the Midwest. There are a couple of Black Ark references in there, so it’s sort of space-y.

“Mars Attacks” is a remix version of Aesop Rock by magOWL.

Frank sings “Fly Me To the Moon” as only he cans, then Joao Gilberto does the same.

That’s Morgan Freeman from the War of the Worlds remake, over Eno’s “Warm Jets Cooling”.

Of course that famous snippet that cuts in is from the War of the Worlds radio play.

Leonard Nimoy performs “Highly Illogical” then Shatner interprets “Rocketman” at the 1978 Sci Fi Awards. You know what, you NEED to watch the video of this!!!

Seu Jorge performs “Space Oddity”. This is only available on the iTunes version of the Life Aquatic album.

The last song on this set is “Aliens” off of Dr. Octagon’s (aka Kool Keith) newest album.

The closing speech is Orson Well’s famous wrap up of War of the Worlds.

Thanks for listening to the second installment of Drown Pirate Radio. Thanks to Diana To for the new podcast logo.

ps, please don’t email me asking for copies of any of the songs played on the show. IWe can talk about trades if you have good material for an upcoming podcast theme though.

Hey ya’ll, guess what…I’ve finished my first episode of Drown Pirate Radio and I think it’s pretty neat.

Click here for episode 1 of Drown Pirate Radio.

Or here to open it directly in iTunes (you can subscribe from there if you like).

I used to work in radio in Nashville, and after that did pirate radio in Minneapolis for a year or two as well. I loved doing it, but due to lack of decent equipment in the pirate radio station and lack of personal say in legitimate radio, I was never able to do the show exactly how I wanted.

I had been wanting to produce a musical podcast for a long time now, but was just too overwhelmed to ever get started. To make it easier, I thought I could dabble with different themes for each show. That’ll keep it interesting, plus make it easier to narrow down my options.

This episode’s theme is space, thus dubbed “Space Mix Tape 01″.
Since there is so much remixing, blending, mashing, and short extra bits, a traditional track list is hard to do, but I’ll give it my best go.

It starts with me talking over A Night With Two Moons (original Forbidden Planet soundtrack by the Barrons).
Then of course, Swingin’ on the Moon by Mel “The Velvut Uzi” Torme.
Then you hear Blue Moon (Dean Martin) over Moon Zero X (Anti-Pop Consortium). Not really a mash up, but I still have this feeling I’m going straight to hell for doing it.
The interlude is one of my pieces (Drown Radio) and was created as a buffer into the next song, Space Boy by the Pumpkins (live recording). Of course my beat comes in again, before the final chorus.
Next up is “He’s Dead Jim” by Confidential… This is a Drown Radio remix if you couldn’t tell. Live Long and Spocker.
This track feeds well into Cousin Isaac’s “Door To Door” the Drown Radio nerdcore remix. It’s a bit of a stretch putting this in the Space Mix tape, but listen to the chorus closely. Can you hear the sound of a Star Trek door closing (from the original show) followed by the sound of a Star Trek The Next Generation door opening as Isaac is singing about going from one door to another? Good.
Speaking of doors, Louis Prima comes in nicely with Beep! Beep! Another Drown Radio bastardization obviously.
Let’s follow that up with Clara Rockmore on the theremin while Gil Scot Herron bitches about a couple whitey’s on the moon.
Then there is a quick clip of Clara bitching about theremins in Hollywood followed by local band Project:Pimento rocking out one of the most theremin soundtracks ever.
Then we hear Chan Marshal (aka Cat Power) playing The Moon followed by Minneapolis based band Work of Saws playing a song off of their first album.
The podcast wraps up with a sleepy little gem from the Modernaires called Sleepy Little Space Cadet.

If you like the episode, and wanna hear more, yell at me. Seriously, the more feedback I get, the sooner the next episode will come out.

Thanks so much to Josh Parker, Otis Fodder, 40s Over 40 and Dana Countryman!
